What’s up with America

Think about America, and the path it’s going down. What have you come up with? Social injustice for ethnic groups? Immigration laws? Guns? Inequality? Whatever you come up with, I’m sure you’ve heard about all of them and have an opinion on them. The topic I would like to talk about today is the social injustice we have in America. The discrimination we face as an entire race is disrespectful. We understand nothing will be handed to us, but we must be 10x better to show we matter in this country and even then, that’s not enough. To be an equal shouldn’t have to be as hard as it is, considering we all look the same on the inside. Since the early times in America, African Americans have been knocked down time and time again. Starting with slavery, slavery ended yes, but we still had to go through the civil rights era to be an equal and to have basic human rights such as drinking out the same water fountain, voting rights, going to the same school as whites, and just to be nothing less than a human being. Yes, we won the rights, but that doesn’t mean the racism stopped there, to this day we continue to deal with the unfair racial discrimination. There have been some celebrities that have become “the voice” we’ve needed in this day in age. One of those voices are Colin Kaepernick. He has trail blazed his way from just being a football star to a social injustice activist. Colin shows us perseverance, leadership, and courage. Of course, he’s had some backlash along the way such as threats, and losing his football contract. People have had a lot to say on how they feel about Colin kneeling while the flag is being displayed during football games. He would call it a silent protest, or fighting for what’s right involving the racial discrimination. But other football fans would call it a disrespect to our country, and to our vets that have served in this country to fight for our freedom. There have been some veterans that are for Kaepernick’s protest. WWII vet Brennan Gilmore says “those kids have every right to protest.” Another vet named Benjamin Starks who served in the US Navy and the US Army reserve said “He is exercising his constitutional right, and I’m glad that he’s doing it.” So, you see whether you’re against him or not, there are veterans who have served this country pride fully and who stand with Colin Kaepernick. This country must do better with the racial discrimination it holds. Colin Kaepernick makes a stand and I stand with him.
